Tired. Uneven. Unexciting.
The son of Will Turner (Thwaites) vows to unleash his father from a condemned life at the bottom of the sea. This leads to a ten-year search for Poseidon’s trident, which has the power to break any curse. In order to find the trident, he’ll need help from the series’ star, Jack Sparrow (Depp), and newcomer, Carina, an astronomer (Scodelario). Meanwhile, the undead Captain Salazar (Bardem) is out to slay all pirates, Jack most of all. Captain Barbosa (Rush) wants to turn Jack in, to keep Salazar off of him. Then, there’s the Royal Navy patrolling the seas. There’s a lot going on, in this, the fifth installment of the series. It’s all decent enough, well-directed, well-acted enough, but there’s no getting past the dwindling freshness of a series five films in. The best scene comes halfway through with Jack and Carina being saved from execution-an impressive action sequence.
