(6-Good Film)
Solid. Pointed. Timely.
Searing drama set during the 12th street riot in Detroit 1967, this film interweaves multiple perspectives of the infamous Algiers Motel Incident that saw white cops terrorize and kill a group of young black men and two white women. Director, Bigelow, takes a largely documentary style approach, especially in establishing the setting, and the film never fails to provoke. The performances are uniformly excellent and involving. Although the picture may not be a fresh take on this type of material, it’s a necessary and workmanlike telling of a crucial chapter in American history, and a strong film.
