Starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Vera-Ellen, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller
Inventive. Spirited. Expert.
Three Navy sailor, with one day’s leave in New York, set out for fun and excitement, and find it in the women they fall in love with. Gene Kelly plays Gabey, the leader of the trio, who instantly falls head over heels for a woman he sees on a poster, then spends the day trying to find the mystery girl. All fun and sweetness, color bursts and fancy dance steps, On the Town is a seminal MGM musical. Directors Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly would next go on to their apex with Singin’ in the Rain, but this film shows off a number of innovative ideas they were playing with and would later use again in their masterpiece (the late dream sequence, for example).
