Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels stars Michael Caine and Steve Martin as rival con artists scamming on the French Riviera. At this point of the film, Martin’s Freddy and Caine’s Lawrence have made a wager that the first to con $50,000 off the designated target, American heiress Janet, gets to stay while the loser must get out of town. At first, Martin seems to have the upper-hand. His wheelchair routine works on the kind hearted Janet, and he plants the idea that he just needs $50,000 to pay a specific doctor, Doctor Schaffhausen, and he could be healed; he could walk and feel his legs again. Just when you think Caine is doomed and out of the picture, he tricks Janet into thinking that he is the fictitious doctor, and takes the opportunity to torture his opponent. This is the funniest scene in the movie which is one of my favorite comedies. Martin and Caine are perfect here, with Caine’s typical charm and suave demeanor being used like weapons to needle the helpless Martin.
