CALL ME MADAM (1953)

Like many great musical numbers, this scene from the sadly obscure Ethel Merman vehicle, Call Me Madam, is pure joy. Donald O’Connor, most famous as the sidekick in Singin’ in the Rain, called his dancing in this film the best of his career. I won’t argue.  Feeling hopeless in his chances of winning the heart of a princess, O’Connor responds by getting good and drunk before erupting in burst of creative and athletic dancing.  Nothing insightful really to be said about the scene, it’s just a lot of talent in one person on display.
