Loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel about a young girl, Fanny Price, who leaves home to live with her more affluent, but less loving relatives. The film makes Fanny more outspoken, and some might quibble with elements made more explicit than they were in the book, but those who can see the movie on its own terms will find an intelligent romantic comedy that succeeds in invoking the spirit of Austen’s mature work. Excellent lead performance by O’Connor.
