Starring Monica Vitti, Alain Delon, Francisco Rabal, Louis Seigner

Cold, bracing meditation on loneliness with beautiful black and white photography. This installment (the third and final in Antonioni’s trilogy) tells the story of a young woman (Vitti)  who breaks up with an older man before moving on to an unstable relationship with a handsome stockbroker (Delon). The bleak aesthetics and sequences of Vitti lost in the masses at the stock exchange establish the theme of her feelings of remoteness. The degree to which others make her feel isolated and she isolates herself becomes a thin line by film’s end leading to a striking last scene.
