Haunting. Disturbing. Grotesque.
Set in Germany before and up through World War II, a kid, Oskar, refuses to grow older (like a charmless Peter Pan), and instead experiences the social issues of his country as a permanent child, marching around, playing a tin drum. Though deeply uncomfortable, I found this adaptation of Günter Grass’ work to be quite powerful. Bizarre, nightmarish, and grimy, this film stays with you, whether you want it to or not.
